New Partnership to Boost Food Security in Africa
The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) announced that partnership with the goal of increasing food production and achieving food security in Africa. The alliance will enable African governments to share knowledge of seeds, soil health, policy and markets. The new partners will join forces through the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) which strives to increase African food security through greater investment in agriculture.

International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Seeks to Map Genome of all Rice Varieties
IRRI has a "vision" to map the genome of more than 109,000 varieties of rice and to make it available to all rice breeders and farmers worldwide. IRRI already shares seeds from the International Rice Genebank with farmers and rice breeders and plans to lmake genome information available.

Bt Cotton in India - An Updated Report
In 2006, Asia-Pacific Consortium of Agricultural Biotechnology (APCoAB) published its first status report on Bt Cotton. At the time there were 40 Bt hybrids under cultivation on 1.26 million hectares. A recenlty released status report states that the number of Bt hybrids currently released for cultivation now tops 600 on over 7.6 million hectares with over 35 seed companies contributing to their development. Production has reached 4.9 million tonnes. The Ministry of Environment and Department of Biotechnology has modified regulatory procedures which provide a more streamlined approval process.

BIO and PG Econonmics Respond to Benbrooke Report
Charles Benbrooke recently released a report through The Organic Center claiming that the use of biotech corn, cotton and soybeans has caused an increase in pesticide use. BIO quicky countered by stating the use of pesticides on biotech crop acres has been reduced by 8.8 percent since 1997 and that one of the benefits enjoyed by farmers who plant biotech crops is the adoption of no-and reduced-tillage system which preserves the natural minerals in the soil and decreases run-off into streams and lakes. PG Economics Limited responded by saying The Organic Center’s assessment of the impact of biotech herbicide tolerant traits (HT) is disappointingly inaccurate, misleading and fails to acknowledge several of the benefits US farmers and citizens have derived from use of the technology. They went on to provide support of their statement.

New Book on Genetic Glass Ceilings
The book examines the application of modern genetics of crop-based agriculture. It is based on a central thesis which includes three main points: there is insufficient unexploited genetic variation within the genepools of our major staple crop species to satisfy global need for increase in crop yield; that genetic engineering is a natural extension of the domesticiation process which began thousands of years ago; and that plant biodiversity be valued and conserved.
